San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO

This city was the start and end point of a great two week adventure in the USA in August 2016. Enjoy my pictures!

First thing to greet us as we came out of the airport was the big mass of cloud in the distance, during the morning and early afternoon it hangs over the city before receding back to the ocean.

As you can see above in the morning the cloud has well and truly returned! In the distance is Millbrae BART station which we took into San Francisco. It probably isn't the best public transit in the world for reliability - we had to get off part way through and take a bus ride before resuming the journey.

We got off BART at Powell Street and wanted to head to Fishermans Wharf so what better way than a classic tram or cable car. The queue lasted about an hour but it was fun swinging our way along the streets to our final destination. (The absence of pictures of the ride is due to me hanging off the edge and not wanting to risk my phone!)

We didn't hang around long in San Francisco on this occasion but had a chance to explore Fisherman's Wharf and see the massive bridge to Oakland which you will see again shortly.

On our first day in San Francisco we headed off on the route 1 to Los Angeles and then onto Vegas and Texas before returning back for a couple more days of sightseeing. Below is the view as California came into sight again.

We landed in Oakland and the great thing about this is you get to ride across the mega bridge you saw earlier into San Francisco. The skyline looks amazing as you approach and I managed to get a photo through the window and then as we headed through the skyscrapers.

First stop on this day was Pier 33 otherwise known as the boarding point for boats to Alcatraz. The boat ride is very rocky to say the least, but as you can see there are great opportunities for pictures of the city and bay during the short crossing.

Once on the island there's time for a short briefing of where things are on the island before you get the chance to enjoy the walk up to the cell house and yet again more spectacular views! You will notice some signs of the American Indian occupation which have been left untouched and as a reminder of this part of the island's history.

On our last day we spent some time at Pier 39. It was Labor Day weekend so it was a very busy but also very cold morning! This is the home not only of some cool shops but of the amusing sea lions who are great to watch!

When the cloud receded there was some great views of the bay including Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.
